Auto Repair in San Francisco - A City Resident's Voice

So there I was, clunking my way down Harrison street looking for an auto repair shop in San Francisco. I had already tried looking online. I called a couple of numbers and was greeted with various levels of courtesy and contempt. Several places told me they did not work on 12 passenger Dodge Ram vans and the ones that did told me they were all booked up. Well, even if it was not weeks my desired turnaround time was three days which drew a chuckle and a snort from most of the auto repair shops in San Francisco. After my online search came up empty, I was forced to resort back to traditional methods namely the yellow pages. My fingers did the walking through a variety of disconnected phone numbers and miscategorized San Francisco auto repair and service centers to end with the same result. I still had not found anyone to correct the mis-firing cylinder that was making my 2000 Dodge Ram conversion van bump and grind it is way down the highway as if dancing to a hidden (and rhythmically challenged) soundtrack broadcast at a frequency that only V8s could understand. Well, although I appreciated my van’s unique buck-and-roll driving style, I did not appreciate the 7 or less miles per gallon that accompanied it.

So the trick was to find an auto repair and service shop in San Francisco that could turn the thing around in 3 days so I didn’t miss my big trip to Utah. At this point I had exhausted the Internet and Yellow Pages so I was left with—well I guess whatever people did before the Yellow Pages. I decided to get into my red rodeo wagon and hit the streets. Noticing that most of the auto repair and service shops in San Francisco were located somewhere on Harrison Street I took a bead on the sunny part of town and headed into the fray. In a stroke of luck that threatens to undermine any future advance planning, the second shop I drove by had so many 12 passenger and cargo vans parked out front that they spilled out of the driveway and onto the street. I took the plunge, went in and introduced myself to Ray and the rest is history. He fixed my van in a timely manner, for a reasonable rate, and communicated clearly throughout the entire process. If my van breaks, I will bring it back to him. Finding auto repair service in San Francisco by just driving down the street—just another reason I love this city.
