question number 464 I just bought a new house in San Francisco, does my local mover have tips for me?

Pack your goods in sealed boxes--tape them shut with packing tape (top and bottom). This allows maximum use of truck space for your local mover as well as safe transport of your goods. Be sure that fragile items are wrapped in paper or bubble wrap, please don't use bags. Bags are impossible to load safely and waste a lot of space and time. (You can purchase packing materials from your local mover in advance). You can take help from local mover in the San Francisco area.

You can find lot of qualified movers in San Francisco who can take the moving hassle from you. Use the right sized box. Small boxes are good for books, records, and dishes. Large boxes are best suited for linens, oversized items, etc. Extremely heavy boxes are unsafe. Lampshades are best packed in one large box. Label boxes--fragile, bedroom, kid's room, kitchen, etc. In a multi-room house put a Post-it near the room's entry identifying what goods should go where. This allows your local mover to operate with a minimum of direction from you.

Reserve elevators, etc., with your building manager well in advance, and notify your local mover ahead of time of special building requirements. If parking is at a premium, "reserve" a space close to your door by parking there the night before. This can be a real time saver for both you and your local mover. Your new phone number should be connected the morning of your move. The old one should be disconnected the following morning. This allows either party to contact the other in case of delays, etc.

Personal items that you will need immediately at your new San Francisco home, medications, checks, work clothes, should be packed separately. It is best if you transport this box so that you know where it is. Soft goods, i.e., clothing, can remain in drawers. Breakables should be packed. Wardrobes are provided for use during your move--clothing can remain hanging in closets. Don't water plants right before your move - seeping pots damage goods. You should pick the mover carefully from San Francisco Yellow page.
