What different types of travel insurance are there?

When I booked my cruise last fall for a winter cruise from my San Francisco travel agent, I had no idea there was travel insurance for cruises. My travel agent suggested I purchase travel insurance and told me what it was. She said it is for travelers who reside in the U.S. or Canada, who are taking a tour or cruise domestically or internationally. Travel insurance includes a package plan that can insure my pre-paid trip costs for covered trip cancellation/interruption. Travel Insurance also includes benefits for travel medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation, baggage loss, baggage delay, and accidental death, plus 24-hour worldwide emergency assistance services.

I was worried about my baggage getting lost and asked my San Francisco travel agent if travel insurance would cover lost baggage. She said that your baggage and personal possessions can be lost, stolen or damaged anytime, anywhere in the world. Travel insurance with 24-hour baggage insurance is important as airlines only provide limited protection for your checked baggage and do not cover your carry-on items. Cruise lines and hotels offer little or no coverage. Homeowners or renters insurance may provide limited benefits or have a high deductible. She suggested that I purchase travel insurance that includes the Baggage benefit, which can cover loss or damage to your bags, personal effects and travel documents. The Baggage Delay travel insurance benefit can reimburse my purchase of necessities if my baggage is misdirected or lost for more than 24 hours.

Once I'd paid the deposit on our family trip through my San Francisco travel agent, someone in my family became unexpectedly ill, and we could no longer take our trip. I was worried that the cancellation of our trip could have caused me to lose some or all of my prepaid trip expenses. I bought travel insurance with Trip Cancellation insurance, so it could provide protection of my covered trip cost when my family member got ill and I had to cancel the trip for covered reasons. Thankfully I insured the full Trip costs with travel insurance. The Travel insurance I bought provided up to 150% of that cost!

Many people, like me, are unaware that the Social Security Medicare/Medicaid Program does not provide coverage for hospital or medical expenses incurred outside the United States. I was traveling abroad with my church group from San Francisco and was concerned about my health while traveling. My travel agent suggested travel insurance to cover medical expense and medical evacuation benefits for those traveling outside the U.S., at low daily rates. The travel insurance plan also includes a 24-hour assistance service that can help with locating medical facilities, arranges medical evacuations, and assists with foreign language translation and more. This travel insurance also offers optional high limit accidental death insurance. I'm grateful my travel agent suggested it, now I can enjoy my trip.
