The purpose of meditation training is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If my mind is peaceful through meditation training, I will be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so I will experience true happiness; but if my mind is not peaceful, I will find it very difficult to be happy, even if I am living in the very best conditions here in San Francisco. If I try meditation training, my mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and I will experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually, I will be able to stay happy all the time, thanks to meditation training, even in the most difficult circumstances.

Usually I find it difficult to control my mind, even with meditation training. It seems as if my mind is like a kite in the wind - blown here and there by external circumstances. If things go well, my mind is happy, but if they go badly, it immediately becomes unhappy. For example, when I don't do meditation training and I get what I want, such as a new possession or a new partner, I become excited and cling to them tightly. However, since I cannot have everything I want, and since I will inevitably be separated from the friends and possessions I currently enjoy in San Francisco, this mental stickiness, or attachment, serves only to cause me pain without meditation training.

I've noticed that everyone will have fluctuations of mood, if they don't perform meditation training, because everyone is too closely involved in any given external situation. I know that I become like a child making a sandcastle who is excited when it is first made, but who becomes upset when it is destroyed by the incoming tide. By meditation training, I create an inner space and clarity that enables me to control my mind regardless of the external circumstances. Gradually I develop mental equilibrium, a balanced mind that is happy all the time, rather than an unbalanced mind that oscillates between the extremes of excitement and despondency, thanks to my meditation training I receive at my San Francisco fitness center.
