I just bought a new house in San Francisco, does my local mover have tips for me?

Reserve elevators, etc., with your building manager well in advance, and notify your local mover ahead of time of special building requirements. If parking is at a premium, "reserve" a space close to your door by parking there the night before. This can be a real time saver for both you and your local mover. Your new phone number should be connected the morning of your move. The old one should be disconnected the following morning. This allows either party to contact the other in case of delays, etc.

Pack your goods in sealed boxes--tape them shut with packing tape (top and bottom). This allows maximum use of truck space for your local mover as well as safe transport of your goods. Be sure that fragile items are wrapped in paper or bubble wrap, please don't use bags. Bags are impossible to load safely and waste a lot of space and time. Large boxes are best suited for linens, oversized items, etc. Extremely heavy boxes are unsafe. Lampshades are best packed in one large box. Label boxes--fragile, bedroom, kid's room, kitchen, etc. In a multi-room house put a Post-it near the room's entry identifying what goods should go where. This allows your local mover to operate with a minimum of direction from you.
